Just HR is recruiting for a seasoned Labour Relations Consultant to support a national retail client navigating its first union negotiation. The company recently certified a union representing approximately 30 employees in its Vancouver location, and is now preparing for collective bargaining set to begin in October. With limited in-house experience in unionized environments, the client needs expert guidance to prepare, strategize, and support the negotiation process from start to finish.


Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance on collective bargaining preparations, including data gathering, compensation strategy, and contract structure.
  • Act as lead negotiator or advisor during collective agreement discussions with the union.
  • Translate complex labour relations concepts into actionable advice for executive and HR stakeholders.
  • Analyze and advise on compensation models, particularly retail-specific structures involving commission and variable pay.
  • Assist in drafting proposals and reviewing union responses to ensure alignment with business priorities.
  • Support internal alignment by preparing leadership and HR staff for negotiation roles and responsibilities.
  • Help forecast post-agreement implementation requirements, including training, policy updates, and compliance.
  • Maintain regular communication with the client team and participate in virtual meetings as needed.
  • Track and report hours worked via a time management platform, with pre-approval from the client.


Requirements

  • Proven experience negotiating or advising on first collective agreements, ideally in a retail environment.
  • Deep understanding of British Columbia labour law and unionized workplace practices.
  • Familiarity with UFCW or comparable unions is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to build trust and credibility with senior leaders and frontline managers.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for high-stakes negotiations.
  • Flexible availability for part-time, project-based consulting work (remote, with potential travel if needed).
  • Independent consulting status preferred; must be available to begin engagement in early September.


Remuneration

$115 - $125 per hour, based on experience and fit. Remote work arrangement with flexible hours. Contract engagement through Horizon Recruitment.
