Horizon Recruitment is recruiting for a Senior Category Manager to support a major organization in evaluating its long-term approach to steel procurement. This six-month contract is an opportunity for an experienced steel industry expert to influence sourcing decisions and help shape a future category strategy. The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of steel manufacturing, supplier markets, pricing trends, and global supply chain challenges. Working with procurement teams and business leaders, you will assess steel-related spending, identify opportunities, and develop practical recommendations to determine whether steel should become a strategic procurement category.
Responsibilities
- Lead the research and analysis needed to develop a long-term steel category strategy.
- Assess steel manufacturing processes, supplier capabilities, market conditions, and industry trends to identify sourcing opportunities and risks.
- Analyze steel pricing models, market indices, and key factors that influence material costs.
- Evaluate how geopolitical events, trade conditions, and global supply chain disruptions affect steel availability and pricing.
- Review current steel-related spending and procurement practices to identify opportunities for improved sourcing and supplier management.
- Conduct supplier and market research to support informed procurement and contract strategy decisions.
- Develop and validate strategic recommendations based on industry insights, market data, and business needs.
- Prepare clear, visually engaging executive presentations, category profiles, and supporting reports that communicate findings and recommendations.
- Work closely with procurement teams, business partners, and senior leaders to gather input and build alignment on strategic priorities.
- Provide expert advice on steel sourcing, supplier relationships, and long-term procurement planning.
Requirements
- 15+ years of relevant experience in the steel industry, sourcing, category management, or related fields.
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in steel manufacturing, steel suppliers, and industry supply chain dynamics.
- Strong understanding of steel pricing mechanisms, market indices, supplier relationships, and market challenges.
- Experience assessing the impact of global trade conditions, geopolitical events, and supply chain disruptions on steel markets.
- Proven experience supporting procurement, sourcing, or contract strategies involving steel.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn complex market information into practical recommendations.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Advanced PowerPoint skills, with the ability to create polished, concise, and visually compelling presentations for executive audiences.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Experience developing category or procurement strategies for steel or related commodities is an asset.
- Experience in utilities, infrastructure, construction, or large industrial procurement environments is an asset.
Remuneration
- $90/hr target rate
